Number 24
Chloe explains to Fay that they didn't want to tell her about the pregnancy until they'd had tests done. Pierce says that Chloe will be having a CVS test to find out the levels of the baby's HD markers. Fay reminds Chloe that telling her is a little bit different than telling the whole world, but Chloe says she didn't want to add anymore stress into her mum's life. Fay realises their conversation about children they had at Harold's earlier holds a lot more weight now.
FAY: I'm so sorry it has to be like this for you.
CHLOE: No, don't do the whole 'I'm responsible' thing. None of this is your fault.
FAY: But it's not fair. You should be enjoying this. You're having a baby!
CHLOE: Might be having a baby. It all depends on the results.
FAY: I see. So some big decisions to be made?
CHLOE: Huge.
FAY: Whatever happens, I want you to feel you can talk to me. If anyone can understand the situation, I can.
CHLOE: I know. Thank you, mum.
Number 32
Aaron finds David looking at some drawings of Emmett's. Aaron says they should frame them and hang them in Emmett's old room for the next kid to see, which isn't the response David wanted to hear. Aaron thinks they should snuggle on the couch and watch TV for the rest of the night, but David wants to ring Emmett and see how he's settling in. This doesn't sit well with Aaron and he gently says they should leave Emmett be and try and move on. When David remains silent, Aaron relents and says they'll give it a few days before they check in with Emmett. David reluctantly agrees.
The Waterhole
The next morning, Toadie is approached by the one and only Angela Lane, whom Toad does not recognise. He's confused, but politely asks why this lady has sought him out to say hello. She introduces herself as 'Ange', which makes Toadie chuckle.
ANGELA: Something funny?
TOADIE: No, no! Sorry, Ange is my mother's name. But it's all good! It's really nice to meet you, Ange. I'm sure you're nothing like my mother.
ANGELA: (laughing) Thanks! It's nice to meet you too. I saw that you changed your relationship status online.
TOADIE: Oh! Okay... um. Let me guess, you couldn't work out how to do a DM?
ANGELA: No! The thing is, we have friends in common. My daughter, Olivia, went to school with Yashvi. So I thought, why don't I just say hello in person?
Toadie agrees that chatting in person definitely trumps the overwhelming nature of internet dating.
ANGELA: No kidding. I'm this close to letting my daughter take the reins for me.
TOADIE: Wow, if I did that I'd only go out with people who said they loved unicorns.
She offers to buy Toadie a coffee, but he's already ordered himself one. Instead, Toadie suggests they meet up again that afternoon, which Angela happily accepts. Meanwhile, behind the newly constructed partitions, Susan and Karl are having a chat about Susan's renewed confidence at school. Susan says she's glad she had Jane around, but worries she took advantage of her friend at times. Their conversation is halted when they hear a laugh from across the room and realise Angela is speaking to Toadie at the bar. Hiding behind the partition, they look on in horror at the flirting that's unfolding.
SUSAN: I've never seen Angela Lane laugh before, I didn't know she could.
KARL: They do look very cosy.
SUSAN: (wide-eyed) You don't think... No. I will not allow that.
Number 24
Chloe and Pierce ready themselves to head to the hospital for the test. Pierce asks Nicolette if she's taking Fay to see David and Aaron, to which she replies soon. After Pierce heads out to the car, Nicolette tells Chloe she'll be her nurse for the afternoon. Chloe hopes she won't need one, but Nicolette says she might experience some cramping and will have heat packs ready. Chloe grins and wonders what they'd do without her.
The Waterhole
Susan and Karl have taken Toadie aside once Angela has left and explained to him exactly who he's talking to. It's a lot for Toad to process.
TOADIE: The Angela Lane from school?
SUSAN: The one and only.
TOADIE: Woah.
KARL: You seemed to have a lot to talk about.
TOADIE: She asked me out for a coffee.
SUSAN: (horrified) Don't tell me you said yes?
TOADIE: (in a shameful whisper) I said yes.
KARL: Toadie!
SUSAN: I told you not to tell me that! This is the same woman who tried to get Elly fired - and me!
TOADIE: Yeah, well, obviously I didn't know that at the time.
SUSAN: And she was so prejudiced towards Mackenzie.
KARL: Shane and Dipi are going to be very disappointed you've taken up with her.
TOADIE: I haven't 'taken up' with anyone old man!
Toadie says that Angela seemed like a nice person, which makes the Kennedys groan, but he adds that he'll cancel their date. Susan has a well thought out response for him.
SUSAN: Yes, good! Good, good, good... well, just, good!
Number 32
David has finally risen after a big sleep in. He's forgotten that they're meant to be spending the day with Fay. Aaron offers to cancel if David's not up for visitors, but David says they should spend as much time with her as they can. Aaron finds a container of Emmett's mac and cheese in the fridge and goes to throw it out, but David stops him and says he might eat it later. Aaron can see David's hurting and asks if he wants to talk about how much he's missing Emmett, because he's barely said anything since the teen left.
DAVID: What's there to say?
AARON: Well just say that you're sad. I'm sad, and I hate seeing you like this. Can't we just be sad together?
DAVID: I'm fine.
AARON: All right, fine. How about I go and take mum out instead. That way you can have some space and you can deal with this however you want to deal with it.
DAVID: Sure. If that's what you want.
Aaron is taken aback by David's pointed emphasis of 'you'.
Pierce and Chloe's Car
Pierce comments on how quiet Chloe is, but Chloe says once they get this test done there's no going back. She wishes she were as chilled as Pierce, but he says he's constantly stressed all the time about what could happen with the baby. But despite all that, "there is literally no one else I would rather do this with". This gets a smile out of Chloe and she agrees with him that they'll just take everything one step at a time.
Harold's Café
Susan is stunned when Angela Lane approaches her and actually compliments her on all the sustainability changes she's made around the school. Angela takes a seat at Susan's table and offers up further compliments, but Susan finally clicks as to why her nemesis is being so friendly towards her.
SUSAN: Are you being nice to me because you're hoping I'll put in a good word for you with Toadie?
ANGELA: Well that never even crossed my mind.
SUSAN: The date's been cancelled, Angela. The two of you have absolutely nothing in common and I've got to keep an eye out for my friend.
ANGELA: You warned him off?
SUSAN: (incredulous) Did you think I was going to give you a ringing endorsement? You've made my life a living hell.
ANGELA: Well, I've been critical at times. But only as a concerned parent! Is Jarrod really going to cancel our date?
SUSAN: Yes he is. I'm surprised you don't know that already.
Angela looks quite miffed by this.
Number 24
Hendrix watches Nicolette get a heat pack out of the microwave. He tells her there's something he doesn't get - if things are meant to be chill for Fay's sake, he doesn't understand why Nic's going out of her way to pick fights with Pierce. Hendrix adds that it's not fair on Chloe either, she's got enough stress waiting for the test results to come through. Nicolette stares him down and says she's here to do a job, and if Pierce doesn't like how she does her job then he shouldn't send a teenager to do his dirty work. Hendrix replies that his dad didn't send him in, so Nic smirks back and says it's the end of the discussion then. At an impasse, Hendrix heads out the back just as Pierce and Chloe arrive home. Nicolette tells them Aaron has taken Fay out, then immediately asks if Chloe wants the heat pack. But Pierce says he's got everything under control and settles Chloe on the couch with some blankets - he took the day off to look after his wife.
The Waterhole
Toadie is surprised to see Angela, asking if she got his text. But Angela says she knows that he only cancelled because of Susan. Toadie carefully tells her that they're probably not compatible, but Angela replies that he hasn't given her a chance. She wonders if he always lets other people make up his mind for him, but Toadie explains he's probably a little bit more open-minded than her. Angela scoffs, "So now you're saying I'm a stuck-up prude?" Karl, who is using the hand sanitiser pump pack at the bar, sees them and wanders over to intervene.
ANGELA: All I'm asking for is a chance.
KARL: That's more than you gave certain members of my family.
ANGELA: Ugh, for heaven's sake. Elly was a terrible teacher! Everyone knew that. And don't even get me started on your wife.
KARL: You are talking about people that Toadie also considers to be family.
TOADIE: Angela this isn't going to work out between us.
ANGELA: So are you really going to take the advice of these buffoons?
KARL: Excuse me?!
ANGELA: Fine, it's your loss Jarrod Rebecchi. It's your loss. And I don't want to date some dodgy suburban lawyer anyway! Why don't you go and get a job in a real firm?
She storms off leaving Toadie stupefied. Karl apologises for butting in but he thought Toadie needed saving. "She's full on," Toadie says, wide-eyed.
Number 24
Nicolette hovers by Chloe on the couch, checking that she's feeling okay. Chloe thanks her for the heat packs, but Nicolette makes a face when Pierce brings a new one over for his wife. Pierce gets a text from work, but assures Chloe he can handle everything from home. And while he's at it, he's going to reschedule all of his meetings on September 2nd when they get the test results. Chloe says she's feeling "lots of things" about the looming date. On one hand she wants to speed everything up so they can find out, but on the other hand she could just live in this moment forever. She notices Pierce making a note in his phone for February, which would be the due date if they go through with the pregnancy. Chloe encourages Pierce to use his own advice and just take things one step at a time. Hendrix wanders in just as Chloe says she's hungry, getting suspicious when Nicolette immediately says she can make something. Pierce says he's got things covered and tells Nicolette to take the afternoon off. With a strained smile, Nicolette looks at Chloe and asks if she's sure, but oblivious Chloe tells her to head out and enjoy herself.
Number 32 Backyard
David gets a visit from Sheila - and Gary the pigeon who is perched on her shoulder. Aaron told Sheila that David was a little bit under the weather: she's really sorry to hear Emmett had to leave. Sheila thought a visit from Gary would be "just the ticket" to cheer David up. David wonders if Aaron specifically asked her to come over, but Sheila says Aaron only mentioned he was a bit quiet.
DAVID: That's because he doesn't want to hear what I have to say.
SHEILA: You two need to stick together to get through this.
DAVID: But Aaron's ready to just wipe his hands clean of Emmett.
SHEILA: What about you, love?
DAVID: It's not right. I get that the system places a higher priority on placing children with their blood relatives, but we were giving Emmett a good life here. And we could still be doing that! We don't even know what he's doing now.
SHEILA: You know there's one person you should be saying all of this to. And it's not me, not Gary. You need to talk to Aaron. You need to open up to him because it's the only way you two are going to get through this together.
The Waterhole
Nicolette has called her hook up from the other week, Alex, to join her for a drink. Alex is playing it cool as Nicolette had pretty much ghosted her up until now and she wants to know what the deal is. Nicolette says she wanted to apologise - she gets so invested in work that everything else gets put on the back burner. Alex wants to know what's changed, and Nicolette replies that her boss said she needed to get a life. Alex was hoping it was more along the lines of Nicolette not being able to stop thinking about her. "Can't it be both?" Nicolette smirks, before heading to the bar to get them some drinks.
Harold's Café
Toadie and Karl join Susan after their bike ride. Toadie's a bit exasperated because he keeps getting more messages from different women and he doesn't know how to deal with the attention. He wishes he could go back in time and tell his teenage self that one day women would be throwing themselves at him. Susan says it's no surprise to her: Toadie's a great catch. Karl thinks Toadie's only problem is that he's going it alone, but Toadie is adamant he doesn't need round two of Karl being his date doctor. Karl reminds him he just rescued him from Angela. Toadie says he'll be eternally grateful for that, but he doesn't need a full-time bodyguard.
KARL: I'm just saying your radar's not terribly good.
TOADIE: Yeah, well, today has been a bit of a wake-up call.
KARL: Which is why you need the personal touch. Like an old-fashioned matchmaker!
SUSAN: Oh yes, if only we knew one.
TOADIE: It's just too much effort. I think I might just skip dating for a while.
Karl looks disappointed.
The Waterhole
Alex is not amused as Nicolette keeps talking about Pierce and Chloe. Nic says that Pierce is a stunned mullet who doesn't understand humour, whereas she and Chloe just "throw back the banter so effortlessly". She adds that she's lucky to have Chloe in the house as they really get one another. Alex states they should make a drinking game out of this conversation, "chug every time you say Chloe." Nicolette apologises, but Chloe's her boss and she spends a lot of time with her, hence the Chloe overload.
ALEX: You talked about her on our last date too.
NICOLETTE: Did I?
ALEX: You mentioned she was bi as well. It was a strange detail for you to relay.
NICOLETTE: I'm not into Chloe! (Alex gives her a 'yeah right' look) She's married. Stunned mullet guy, remember?
ALEX: Doesn't mean she's not flirting with you.
NICOLETTE: So from what I've told you, you think she's flirting with me?
Alex gives her another incredulous look, so Nicolette changes tack and says she would love to get to know Alex more. But Alex says Nic doesn't want to be on a date, she wants to be at home with her boss, and she reckons Nicolette already knows that. Nicolette realises she's lost Alex and heads home, but not before Alex sarcastically calls out "say hi to Chloe for me!" Hendrix has conveniently walked into the pub and overheard this last tidbit of conversation, which piques his interest.
Number 32
Aaron tells David that Fay had a lovely day out, then asks him how he is. David says he's good but Aaron knows he's lying. He gets frustrated when he realises David has been texting Emmett, even though they weren't going to for a few days.
AARON: David, I thought we agreed we were going to give him some space.
DAVID: Yeah well, that's what you wanted to do, which is fine. But I had to think about what was best for me. So I texted him to see how he was getting on with his aunt.
AARON: And why's that?
DAVID: Because we don't know her. And I want to make sure that she's taking his wellbeing seriously.
AARON: David this is really starting to look like you're trying to find a way to win him back.
DAVID: I just want him to be happy and safe.
AARON: So do I, so do I, but we don't get to decide what that looks like. We're not his carers anymore.
DAVID: We might have to be if this aunt's no good.
AARON: Hey! That ship has sailed. You're turning this into some sort of a competition, that's what Jenna did. Do you really want to look like Jenna? The sooner you can let go, the sooner you can move on.
DAVID: Well maybe I can't just yet! Maybe I don't want to go out and have fun. Maybe I don't want to strip his bed and pack up his things, or pretend like he never happened!
AARON: That is not what...
DAVID: Maybe I can't just forget about him as easily as clearly you can!
The Waterhole
Hendrix takes it upon himself to approach Alex at the bar and introduce himself as the son of Nicolette's employers. He tells Alex there's been a few issues at home, so he was hoping if she was dating Nicolette then perhaps she could spend more time with her.
HENDRIX: It would just be good if Nicolette gave my dad and Chloe some space.
ALEX: Sorry to be the one to tell you but I don't think Nic wants space. She has the hots for your step-mum. And if I were you, I'd keep an eye on her.
While this is troubling news, Hendrix can't help but look somewhat happy at his suspicions being confirmed.
