Goodwood Prison
Andrea eavesdrops at the back of the Rec Room while Owen tells Heather she's been approved for the visitor gardening program. Heather is delighted, even more so when Owen says he's going to try an organise an appointment for her and Dee that afternoon. Owen tells Heather that everyone can see how hard she's been working to get her life back on track, "you've earned this." As he turns to leave, he gives Andrea a conspiratorial grin, which Andrea returns.
The Waterhole
Aaron and David tell Elly about the apology letter Aaron sent the foster care assessor. Aaron's stressing because there's been no response yet, but Elly assures them they can't be the only couple who have succumbed to the pressure of all the hoops they're made to jump through. Paul joins them and offers to call the agency himself to speed things along, but David soon puts a stop to that idea. He hears Aster fussing in her pram and picks her up for a cuddle. Elly watches David and Aaron interact with her daughter and appears to get an idea about something that may help the couple.
Lassiters Complex
Dipi bumps into Pierce and thanks him for the Lassiters Pride event as it meant so much to Mackenzie. Pierce is happy the event was able to bring everyone together. He heads off to work just as Dee passes by. She spots Dipi and has a chat with her, hoping things don't have to be awkward between them. Dipi asks if Heather has mentioned anything more about Dee's dad, but Dee has decided she's not going to keep searching for him for the time being: "Why make things more complicated, right?"
DEE: How's Toadie?
DIPI: He's not great. He's missing you.
DEE: (upset) I really didn't mean to hurt him like this. And I know this is what you and Shane were scared of.
DIPI: We were protective because of the way Heather and Andrea tormented him. We know how much you love Toadie.
Dee says she's glad Toadie's got them for support. Dipi hopes Dee has the support she needs too and adds that she's always around if Dee needs to talk.
Ramsay Street
Kyle is filling Toadie and Shane in on his latest love-life drama - aka he broke up with Jess, Roxy went to Darwin and now that she's returned "we're straight back into limbo." Shane says he didn't see a Kyle and Roxy pairing coming, but Toadie crows that he knew something was going on. Kyle admits that the 'something' has been him mucking Roxy around, so no wonder she's had a gutful. Toadie says it just sounds like Roxy wants space to get her head around everything, which Shane agrees isn't always a bad thing.
KYLE: How good would it be if life just had a fast-forward button. Y'know, just skip through all the messy bits. (He glances at Toadie) Like I'm telling you something you don't already know.
TOADIE: A rewind button would be good.
SHANE: And a delete button.
TOADIE: Yeah.
They head into #30 just as Paul parks out the front of his house. Elly sees him and heads over for a chat about David and Aaron. She really feels bad about how upset they are and had the idea about asking them to be Aster's godfathers. Paul says he thought Bea already had dibs on being a godparent, but Elly says there's always more love to go around. Elly then says she wanted to flag the proposal with Paul first because she knows it's a big ask and wondered if the boys would be up for it. Paul thinks the boys will be happy and tells Elly he'll organise a little celebration so she can "pop the question".
Goodwood Prison
Two officers keep watch while Dee and Heather work together in the garden. Heather breathes in the fresh air and says when she's finally let out of jail she'll never take stuff like that for granted. Dee gives her pointers on how to plant the broad beans properly and Heather comments on how good she is at gardening. Dee says she really got into it when she moved to Byron Bay and jokes that it's made her judgy about the way some people treat their gardens (the way Karl crowds his zucchinis is apparently criminal). She notices Heather is giving her a strange look and asks if she's got dirt on her face.
HEATHER: (awed) No you... You just laughed like my mum used to.
DEE: (smiling) Really?
HEATHER: Yeah. Wow, it took my breath away. Just seeing it, it's uncanny.
Dee looks touched by the connection.
Number 32 Backyard
David and Aaron are sitting on the porch watching the rain, trying to convince themselves that they'll be okay if the foster care avenue doesn't work out but they sound incredibly downcast. Paul drops by and asks the boys to join him for something (not explaining what), but they're not in the mood. Paul says they can't think of this as an end to their journey of becoming parents, but rather a "sharp turn in another direction".
DAVID: Sure, but I think we're allowed to be disappointed for at least another couple of hours.
AARON: Yeah, try months. I'm going to take down all this baby-proofing. It's something practical I can do.
PAUL: You can't give up.
AARON: If I want to stress eat my way through the fridge, I want to be able to open the thing without having to use two hands.
David tells his dad they'll catch up with him after, they're not particularly in a socialising mood right now.
A short while later Elly and Bea arrive with Aster at Paul's behest. He's hoping that by bringing the celebration to David and Aaron they'll be somewhat cheered up. Speaking of the boys, they appear in the backyard wondering what Elly, Bea and bubs are doing there. Elly explains to them that they've always been there for her, no matter what, so she's hoping they'll do the same for Aster officially as her godfathers. She adds that she can't think of anyone better in the world for the job. Aaron and David smile and say they'd be honoured.
Number 30
Toadie sends Nell off to clean up her room after they made pikelets for lunch. Dipi arrives home from work and tells Toadie and Shane that she ran into Dee earlier. Toadie asks how she's doing and Dipi says it's obvious she's struggling with the break up. Toadie mutters that he doubts it, thinking about seeing Dee chatting to the mystery guy in Harold's, but doesn't elaborate further to his family. He says it's good Dee has Dipi for support, especially now that she's looking for her dad. But Dipi tells him that Dee's called off the search for the time being. Toadie processes this new info.
Number 32 Backyard
Elly gives a small speech about why she thinks David and Aaron will be perfect godparents to Aster.
ELLY: You took me and Aster in when we needed it the most. You loved us, cared for us, guided us and showed us what it was like to have a second family. If you can do all of that I know you'll always be able to take care of her.
AARON: And we always will.
DAVID: It's such an honour to watch Aster grow into an adult. We'll always be people she can trust and confide in.
AARON: Yeah, although when it comes to good advice don't get it from me. Make sure you get it from him.
DAVID: It'll be a team effort, but we'll always try and steer you in the right direction.
AARON: Because that's what she did for us, isn't it? Aster was the one who reminded us just how bad we wanted to be parents ourselves. (Aaron holds Aster's hand) Although I'm going to be the one buying your first glass of champagne - as soon as you turn eighteen of course.
DAVID: And if you ever need help with your science homework come to Uncle David.
AARON: Yeah don't come to me because at report card time you won't be thanking me.
Bea jokes that they have to leave something for the godmother to do, but Aaron says she can teach Aster how to sing. David adds that the most important thing they can promise Aster is that they'll never let her get lonely. Elly smiles and says she couldn't ask for anything more.
Goodwood Prison
Heather accidentally nicks her hand with a gardening tool. Dee inspects it and says the cut doesn't appear too deep but it still needs to be cleaned up. She calls out to the guards that they need a first aid kit because "my mum's cut herself". She doesn't realise she's said 'mum' until she notices Heather stare at her in surprise.
DEE: I just said that without even thinking. I'm sorry. You were talking about your mother and I think the word just stuck in my head.
HEATHER: (smiling) No that's okay, you don't need to apologise. It had a nice ring to it even if it's the only time you say it.
The guard brings the first aid kit over and Dee goes about fixing Heather's wound.
Number 30
Dipi plays chasey with Nell while Toadie is fixated with something on his phone. Shane joins in with the fun and tries to get Toadie involved, but Toadie suddenly has to head out somewhere for an hour. He asks Dipi and Shane to look after the kids while he's gone. Shane and Dipi share a bewildered look.
The Waterhole
Celebrations have moved from #32 to the pub. Paul tells David and Aaron that it's nice to see them in a slightly happier mood, and that they can share their love with Aster while they're waiting for a family of their own. Bea says they need more photos to commemorate the day and gets Paul to take one of the "official dream team". David suddenly gets an email from the foster care agency, which neither he nor Aaron want to open because they're too nervous. Elly eventually grabs the phone to read it but takes a while to respond, which only makes David and Aaron more anxious.
AARON: Anytime you want to break the news now.
DAVID: Just yes or no.
ELLY: (emotional) They've approved you guys. They said yes.
It takes a moment for the pure shock to wear off before David and Aaron break into huge smiles and share a kiss, elated they're going to be foster parents. Paul, Elly and Bea are thrilled for them.
Goodwood Prison
Back in the visitor room, Heather thanks Dee for spending the day with her. It's the best time she's had in a long while. They share a hug before a guard takes Heather back to her cell. Dee sees Owen and thanks him again for organising the garden visit. He's pleased and says they should look at scheduling in another visit. He comments on the fact that the program is really popular so spots are being snapped up quickly - he only got Dee in today because of a cancellation. But 'miraculously' there's a spot free Friday. Dee says she has to work, but Owen encourages her to swap her shifts around because the next free appointment isn't until mid-July. With this in mind, Dee says to book her in Friday.
The Waterhole
David hangs up from a phone call to the foster care assessor and immediately plants a big kiss on Aaron. He says that it was Aaron's apology letter that got them over the line.
DAVID: She said your honesty shone through.
AARON: Really? So without it we would have been toast?
DAVID: Pretty much.
AARON: Wow.
DAVID: And I asked about the questions and why they had to be so intrusive, and she said that's just the way they have to be. It's not a judgement on us, they just need to see whether there's any trauma that might affect the way we parent.
AARON: Okay I guess that makes sense.
DAVID: And she assured me it wasn't an attack on our morals or the way we live.
Pierce wanders in just as they're celebrating and is pleased to hear David and Aaron's happy news. Aaron says he should text Chloe as well, but first he and David need to hurry home and re-baby-proof the house.
Rebecchi Law Office
Toadie has called private investigator John Wong in to help him in the search for Dee's father. He apologises to John that he doesn't have much information to go on, only that the man's name is Peter Wilson. And that he was admitted to a hospital in WA in the late 70s. John says he'll do what he can but it will probably take him a while. Toadie says he has faith in John - he's a legend. When John leaves, Toadie looks torn like he's unsure about whether he should be helping Dee or not.
Goodwood Prison
Andrea kicks another prisoner out of the Rec Room so she can have a covert chat with Owen. He tells Andrea that everything is going according to plan with Heather and Dee, then asks if she still has "it". The "it" in question turns out to be the shiv Andrea knocked out of Elly's hand during her fight with Patrice, which Andrea slides out of her bra and into the book she's pretending to read. "Bring on Friday," Andrea says with a smirk.
Number 32 Backyard
David and Aaron have a rest after putting all the baby-proofing stuff back together. They float the idea of maybe taking a holiday before they start their foster care so they can do all the things they want to do before they start raising little humans. But of course David's phone starts to ring, and guess who it is... The agency. Aaron watches him expectantly as he has a brief chat before hanging up.
AARON: What did they say?
DAVID: They have a child who needs emergency accommodation. They want to know if we can take them.
AARON: When?
DAVID: Immediately.
