No 30
A still bruised Paul has arrived for his homecoming barbecue, and there to welcome him are Amy, Jimmy, Steph, Charlie and Toadie. Amy fusses over him, asking if he wants anything.
PAUL: I'm fine. Just being here with my friends and family - that's all I need.
TOADIE (to Steph): Did you bring the right Paul Robinson home?
PAUL: Yeah, ha-ha-ha! Laugh all you want, but you know what - being inside made me realise that it is the simple things that count. You know, just being around the people that I care about.
AMY: Does that include Terese?
PAUL: Honestly? I dunno.
He smiles mysteriously.
Ramsay Street
Terese stands outside No 30, looking conflicted as to whether or not to approach.
Here be titles.
No 30
Paul and Steph are now alone. He asks her how the motel business is going. She says it's going well, apart from all the journos calling up to ask her questions about Paul. He admits he's granted an interview to a cadet reporter later in the day.
Steph tells Paul he can stay at the motel for as long as he wants, but reminds her that she's running things now.
PAUL: If you remember correctly, I didn't actually sign over the business!
STEPH: ...
PAUL: Oh, come on, Steph. If we work together we can make a real go of things. Get filthy rich.
STEPH: What happened to the simple life?
PAUL: Money makes life simple.
STEPH: Yeah, right. Cos there is still that small matter of the $100K you owe me.
PAUL: Ah yeah, the bail money.
STEPH: Yeah, that old chestnut.
PAUL: What would you say if I could get you $50,000 by the end of the week?
STEPH: I'd say that bruise on your head's deeper than you think.
Steph encourages Paul to take some time out to rest, but he says he needs to get back to work.
STEPH: Right, okay - well, if you can get me the money, you get your share back.
Harold's Café
Sonya, Toadie, Nell and Walter are having a coffee, and talking about how much Paul has changed. Walter remarks that he's been given a second chance at life.
WALTER: That's a very rare gift. One that I hope Zoe will get soon.
He explains that he and Zoe are heading back to Sydney this afternoon, so she can start treatment again at her local hospital.
TOADIE: We're not saying no to testing Nell. We just need a bit more time, that's all.
Zoe, who has been getting a drink at the counter, rejoins them - but as she sits down, looks faint and says she doesn't feel well. Walter says they should get her to a hospital, now.
Lassiter's Complex
Paul is enjoying his freedom, and tells Steph it's great to be 'back amongst it' again.
PAUL: Listen, Steph - I just want to thank you for everything you did for me.
STEPH: I had nothing to do with your release.
PAUL: Even so, you were the one that believed in me. You fought for me, and I've got to tell you - if it wasn't for you, I... probably would've given up. So, thank you.
STEPH: You're welcome.
Steph sends Paul off to his interview with the journo, adding that he still has that $50,000 to earn. Paul says it's practically in the bank already.
The Waterhole
Gary is at the bar, talking to Sheila and using a tablet to look for job opportunities. Gary's reading out job titles, But Sheila is still bitter about his comments regarding how poorly she's looked after Xanthe since she moved in.
SHEILA: Why don't you try 'nanny'? Since you seem to know everything there is to know about raising kids - Gary Poppins!
Gary says he was just worried about Xanthe; he didn't mean to criticise. He asks her if she has any jobs going behind the bar, but Sheila says there's a freeze on staff hire while Julie Quill is in remand!
SHEILA: Besides. I don't want someone so supercalifragilistic getting up my expialidocious at work - particularly now I have no-one sensible living at home!
GARY: If you bring up Father Jack one more time -
SHEILA: I just wanted him to stick around a little bit longer because he was a good example!
GARY: But Xanthe's doing okay now!
SHEILA: I meant for you!
Paul shows up, and shakes the hand of the journalist he's meeting, Nathan Grundy - before sauntering over to the bar to speak to Gary.
PAUL: How's the outside world treating you?
GARY: About what happened in prison - if I'd known you were innocent...
PAUL: What, you wouldn't have had me beaten to a pulp, or nearly choked to death on my lunch?
GARY: ...
PAUL: Oh, relax. If it hadn't been for your 'help', young Nathan over there wouldn't have half as good a story to run with.
GARY: I really am sorry.
PAUL: Yeah. Water under the bridge.
Once Paul's rejoined Nathan, Gary is relieved to be off the hook - but Sheila warns him that Paul isn't the kind of person to forgive that easily.
Erinsborough Hospital
Zoe is asleep in a hospital bed. Karl tells the assembled Walter, Sonya, Toadie and Nell that she needs rest while they wait for her test results. Walter is very upset. Sonya assures him that Zoe will improve once her treatment resumes; but Walter retorts that it's not working - Zoe needs a transplant.
TOADIE: Okay. Well we won't be rushed into this.
WALTER: Yes, Jarrod, we know where you stand.
TOADIE: We just need some more time. You're the one who has backed us into a corner here.
SONYA: Jarrod, can we please just not -
TOADIE: We will cooperate, if and when we discover that the process will in no way harm our daughter. Until then, nothing is happening.
Karl asks if he can have a word with Sonya outside.
KARL: Toadie doesn't know, does he?
Sonya admits that there's been a lot of tension around the issue, and while she hates keeping secrets from Toadie, she decided to have Nell tested without telling him.
SONYA: I wanted to rule it out so we could move forward.
KARL: Okay, you've got a problem... Nell's test results are back. She's a match.
The Waterhole
Paul is describing the vicious attack on him in prison, while cadet journo Nathan types away. Paul says he was lucky to get out alive.
Conversation moves onto journalism, and the time when Paul used to own the Erinsborough News. Paul explains they used to have a system where journalists could upload stories from wherever they were, and Nathan confirms this is also the system in place at the West Waratah Star. Paul manages to ascertain that it's possible to log back in after the editor has approved the story and alter it.
Paul sends Nathan to the bar to get more drinks - but once he's gone, he grabs his laptop, quickly finds a document marked 'passwords', and takes a picture on his phone of Nathan's login details...
No 22
Terese is talking to Brad about Paul's release. She said she considered going to No 30 and apologising to him earlier, but decided she couldn't face him. Brad says he feels guilty too, but reminds Terese that all of the evidence pointed to Paul being guilty.
TERESE: He begged me over and over again to believe him. I should have listened.
BRAD: Well, things are different now. He's been released. He has his life back. After everything you've been through, I would hate to see you walk away from a chance at happiness.
Erinsborough Hospital
Karl reports to Walter, Sonya and Toadie on Zoe's health. He explains that her red cell and platelet counts aren't ideal - there's a high risk of infection. He can give her more antibiotics, but that's about all he can do. Walter says a transplant's Zoe's only option.
WALTER: Look, I promised myself that I wasn't going to do this. But I am going to. I'm going to ask you again. Zoe is running out of time, and Nell could be her only chance.
TOADIE: The likelihood of Nell being able to donate is incredibly low, right?
SONYA: ... Yes. But she's a match.
Sonya admits that she had Nell tested a couple of days ago - it was just a quick needle in the arm. But Toadie is immediately furious that she went ahead without his consent. Karl says the result means that Nell could donate bone marrow to Zoe, if she had parental consent.
TOADIE: Which she doesn't yet!
WALTER: Jarrod, I am begging you...
TOADIE: She's a three-year-old, okay! We have no idea how traumatic this could be for her. We need to put her welfare first.
SONYA: ...
The Waterhole
Gary is on his tablet, reading to Sheila the news story that Nathan has apparently published about Paul.
GARY (reading): 'Despite his clear guilt, known criminal Paul Robinson has once again dodged the legal system - a murderer walks amongst us.'
Sheila asks how a job interview that Gary has attended went, but he hasn't had any luck so far.
Paul comes in, for a meeting with Penny Telford, the editor of the West Waratah Star. She's confused, as the article she greenlit was 'highly sympathetic' to Paul, but has since changed into a rant about what a homicidal maniac he is. Having no idea that Paul changed the article himself, she promises to remove it from the website and publish a retraction - but Paul says the damage to his reputation may have already cost him a fortune.
PAUL: Now, the way I see it, you have two choices - one, you pay me $50,000, you fire your cadet, and you hire an employee of my choosing.
PENNY: What's option two?
PAUL: Join me on a date.
PENNY: Where to?
PAUL: The courthouse.
PENNY: Paul, the paper's struggling.
PAUL: Well, 50 grand's a hell of a lot better than half a mill, isn't it?
PENNY: I'll get you your money.
PAUL: Good choice.
Paul goes over to another seating area, and makes a call on his mobile.
PAUL: Yeah. Listen, everything's going to plan. So I want you to jump on a plane, and I'll see you tomorrow, okay?
Robinson's Motel
Terese is waiting in the storeroom, when Paul arrives. He is not pleased to see her. Terese is trembling, and speaks nervously.
TERESE: When I didn't find you here, I thought I'd just wait.
PAUL: Was there something you wanted?
TERESE: ... I came to apologise to you, for everything.
PAUL: Well, at least I got to see your true colours, didn't I?
TERESE: Please, Paul - you've got to see it from my point of view. There was just so much evidence.
PAUL: All of which I explained! And, you know, just to make sure that I was put away, you bribed a witness.
TERESE: I still haven't forgiven myself for that.
PAUL: There was a line around the block of other suspects that you could have railroaded.
TERESE: Hey, every time another name came up, I lived in hope that it could mean that you didn't do it! But they just kept getting cleared. And I just gave up hope.
PAUL: I would have given you anything. I would have done anything for you, Terese. And I thought that you felt the same way.
TERESE: I did, I did. I do. I love you. I am truly, utterly sorry for everything. For all of it.
PAUL: ...
TERESE: I've lost my job, I've lost my husband, and I've lost my son! Please - please, I can't lose you too.
But Paul pulls away from her, and opens the door.
PAUL: It's too late. Whatever we had, it's gone. Now get out.
Terese leaves, sobbing. Paul looks upset.
Ramsay Street
Toadie and Sonya are leaving No 30 with Nell - Toadie to a meeting (via daycare), and Sonya to the hospital to see Zoe. But Toadie's still bitter about Sonya's decision to get Nell tested without asking him.
SONYA: You know I value your opinion.
TOADIE: Yeah. When it suits you.
SONYA: Alright. I understand you're angry about this, but if the test results had come out differently, would it really be that big a deal?
TOADIE: It's not the point. We're meant to be partners.
SONYA: Well, yeah, when it suits you!
TOADIE (strained): Have a nice day. I love you.
SONYA: ... I love you.
Sonya bids them goodbye as they get into the car.
A taxi pulls up in Ramsay Street; it's Paul's niece Madison!
No 26
Madison is having tea with Paul, Amy and Jimmy. We learn that Paul has arranged for her to be the new cadet journalist at the West Waratah Star. Madison is surprised to learn about the previous cadet and the slanderous article he 'wrote' about Paul, and asks if he's sure he's comfortable with her working there. Paul says the paper needs someone with common sense.
Madison explains she's dropped everything to come down here at such short notice - cadetships are so hard to find.
AMY: Well, your boyfriend can't be too happy going long-distance?
MADISON: It's all good. And I'm going to defer uni. Bylines beat exams any day!
Harold's Café
Paul, Amy and Madison are having a coffee, when Gary comes in in a shirt and tie.
PAUL: On the job hunt, are you?
GARY: Nah. Thought I'd get dressed up for a muffin (!)
Gary says he'd take any job at the moment to support himself and Xanthe. Paul mentions that there's a caretaker position going at the motel which he assures Gary is 'all above board'. Gary gives Paul an immediate 'yes', so Paul says he'll be in touch. But the crocodile smile tells us it might not be as lucrative an opportunity as Gary imagines.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sonya is fussing over Zoe, who's still in the hospital bed, but about to be discharged. Walter arrives.
WALTER: Any news from Callum?
SONYA: ... He's not a match.
WALTER and ZOE: ...
SONYA: Why don't you guys just stick around here? At least until Zoe's feeling better?
But Walter and Zoe are keen to get back to her regular hospital so she can resume treatment. Walter gets a text. He says it's Terese, and that he's going to go and meet up with her.
WALTER: ... Maybe I could pick up Nell from daycare? It would give me a chance to say goodbye before we head off.
Sonya agrees to this, saying Nell has some new fairy friends she'd want Walter to meet!
SONYA: Hey. I just wanted to say that...
WALTER: I know.
Both Sonya and Walter are very emotional. He leaves.
Harold's Café
A random bloke, Justyn, is watching Paul, Amy, Steph and Jimmy as they have a coffee. The adults are all having a laugh at some lyrics Jimmy has misheard.
JIMMY: So if it's not 'kicking your cat all over the place', what are the words of the song? Seriously?
He approaches.
JUSTYN: Don't I know you from somewhere?
AMY: I don't think so. Unless you've seen me around the neighbourhood?
JUSTYN: ... Yeah. Yeah, that's probably it. Sorry to bother you.
He leaves, and Amy looks uncomfortable. She announces she has to get back to the yard, and leaves with Jimmy. Steph comes in, and Paul presents her with a cheque for $50,000 from the West Waratah Star.
PAUL: So what do you say? Partners?
STEPH: Well, that was the deal.
PAUL: Oh, come on. I intend to get this all back. You're more than welcome to come along for the ride.
STEPH: Count me in!
They shake on it.
No 30
Toadie and Sonya come in. He's annoyed that Walter let pick Nell up, suspecting that Walter's just trying to make them feel guilty for not offering up Nell as a donor. But they soon realise that Walter and Nell aren't in the house.
TOADIE: His and Zoe's stuff has gone.... There's no sign of their bags. I know this is gonna sound crazy, but I think that he has taken Nell!
Promo
- Piper is jealous when Madison hangs out with Tyler
- Sarah's back, and asks Angus to tell her whatever he has to say
- Sonya calls Walter's phone, and Zoe asks if he's going to answer it. Nell is with them
