Coffee Shop
Hannah is sitting at a table with Paul, adding numbers up on a calculator. Paul mutters that he can't believe he listened to her about Mystic Mariah. He then asks her when her dad will get the bill. Hannah replies that the 'phone company said it should be in a couple of days.
PAUL: Have you figured how much it's going to cost?
HANNAH: I'm, er, still working on it.
Paul grabs the calculator and gasps:
PAUL: $370?!
HANNAH: Yeah, well, I'm hoping I made a miscalculation somewhere along the line!
PAUL: Phil is going to totally *freak*.
Paul then asks how much *he's* up for. Hannah replies that she thinks it's about $70. Paul sighs that he doesn't have that. Hannah mutters that they're in deep trouble if they don't figure out a way to make the money.
Ramsay Street
Sarah and Joel are walking along the street, Sarah saying that she only hopes Karen let Toadie down gently; he's besotted with her.
JOEL: Is?
SARAH: Is. Was. I don't know. I dread to think what sort of mood he's going to be in *now*.
Joel says they should have stayed at the pub: it's time for him to break the news to the Kennedys that he's moving into No. 30. Sarah asks if they'll think he's some sort of traitor. Joel replies that he hopes not. Sarah stops in her tracks and stares at No. 28. Joel asks her if she's OK.
SARAH (indicating the vehicle in the driveway): I guess Karl must be home already.
JOEL: Yep, that's his car. You going to be right with all this?
SARAH: Yeah, I'll be fine. I'm *happy* for the Kennedys.
The two of them suddenly hear loud rock music start blasting out of No. 30. Sarah comments that Toadie always cranks it up when he's depressed. She heads off to see if he's all right.
No. 30
Sarah walks into the lounge room and turns the stereo down. Toadie is lying on the floor in front of the couch and Sarah asks him how he is.
TOADIE: Fine... for someone who feels like crud.
SARAH (gently): She told you, huh?
TOADIE: If she just wanted to break up with me, she should have just have done it; no need to go sneaking around behind my back; with Alex, too: the guy's old enough to be her *father*. Her sense of humour... don't even get me started on *that* one!
SARAH: I won't take that as a comment on my taste in men!
Toadie quickly apologises, explaining that he wasn't having a go at *her*. He then asks her whether she's not the slightest bit annoyed.
SARAH: A little - although I can't blame Alex for hooking up with someone else: I was never exactly enthusiastic about the relationship.
TOADIE (sighs): I wish I could say the same about *Karen*.
Sarah suggests that the two of them talk things through. Toadie, however, retorts that the last thing he wants to do is to let that girl get close to him again.
No. 28
The Kennedys and Joel are busy in the kitchen, although there's an element of mayhem involved! Karl asks if he should open the wine. He asks if red's all right: he's got a nice drop as it's a special occasion.
LIBBY: Mike will be impressed: he *likes* a good red.
SUSAN (looking surprised): *Mike*?
LIBBY (innocently): Yeah. Didn't I tell you? Mike's coming round for dinner.
SUSAN (coolly): No, you didn't.
LIBBY: Is it a problem?
SUSAN (retorts): No, but it would be nice to be consulted.
LIBBY: I thought you wanted to meet him.
SUSAN (pointedly): Well of *course* I want to meet him, but, Libby, tonight is supposed to be a family dinner for your dad.
LIBBY: Well I can call him and tell him not to come.
SUSAN (tersely): Well it's a little bit late for that, now, isn't it?
Susan then asks Karl if he minds if Mike joins them for dinner. Karl just tells her that it's her call.
LIBBY (sourly): If I'd known that it was going to be *this* much trouble I wouldn't have *bothered*.
SUSAN: Well normally it wouldn't be, Libby, but come on: tonight of all nights?
Susan asks Joel to lay another place at the table. Karl stands there, apparently trying to distance himself from the bickering.
No. 26
Paul and Hannah come in from school to find Phil sitting on the couch. Hannah comments in surprise that she thought he was seeing a client this evening. Phil replies that he's heading off in a second. He then asks the kids what *they're* doing. They tell him they're studying - a small business project.
PHILIP (smiles): Small business? Well I just happen to know someone who has a bit of expertise in that area. I'm sure they might be persuaded to give you a hand, if you get my drift.
PAUL: Who - Lou?
PHILIP (sounding put out!): *Me*.
HANNAH: Thanks, dad, but I think we've got it covered.
With that, Philip heads out, musing that maybe his *client* will need his help! Paul and Hannah sit down on the couch. Paul suggests they have a brainstorm or something.
HANNAH: If that stupid jukebox didn't cost so much to repair, we wouldn't be *in* this problem.
PAUL: Gees, Hannah, *that's* a good start.
HANNAH: Well *you* think of something.
Paul sighs that he can't think of anything. Hannah suggests that they could think of something to make and sell.
PAUL: Like what?
HANNAH (snaps): *I* don't know, Paul. Use your brain.
No. 28
Libby, Susan and Karl are sitting around watching television and drinking wine. Susan sighs at Libby:
SUSAN: So - do you think we'll be meeting Mr. Wonderful any time soon?
LIBBY: He's coming; he's got a hectic schedule at the moment, that's all.
Karl offers the two of them more wine.
Across the room, Joel sits down with Bill at the table and tells him that he's managed to find a place to live: No. 30. Bill smiles that that's a top idea! Joel asks anxiously if he thinks it's going to upset anyone; he indicates the other Kennedys with a nod of his head. Bill tells him that, even if it does, that's *their* problem. There's suddenly a knock on the front door and Bill calls across to Libby teasingly:
BILL: Ooo, I wonder who *that* could be?!
He and Libby both run to the door to answer it. Bill gets there first and opens the door. Mike steps inside and Bill introduces himself and shakes Mike's hand. Libby gives Mike a kiss and then introduces him to the gathered residents of No. 28, saying:
LIBBY: Right... introductions. Everyone: this is Mike!
No. 26
Hannah and Paul are sitting at the kitchen table, looking through recipe books. Hannah suggests brownies and then doughnuts, but Paul pooh-poohs both ideas. *He* suggests lamingtons. Hannah says uncertainly that she doesn't know how to make them. Paul, however, replies that the recipe's right there: they can start tonight and have them ready by tomorrow morning.
HANNAH: Yeah - if Mrs. Kennedy *lets* us...
PAUL: Why don't we just ask her?
HANNAH: What - *now*?
PAUL: There's no *better* time.
HANNAH: What if she asks us what it's for?
PAUL (shrugs): We lie.
Hannah smiles that they could tell Susan the same as they told her dad: that it's a small business project. Paul goes to the 'phone. A few seconds later, Susan comes on.
No. 28/No. 26
It's noisy in the background at No. 28, and Susan has trouble hearing Paul speaking. She asks everyone to keep the noise down to a dull roar. She then asks Paul what she can do for him.
PAUL: I'm just here with Hannah and we were wondering how you'd feel about us setting up a little stall at school tomorrow.
SUSAN: What *sort* of a stall?
PAUL: A lamington stall. It's kind of a small business project.
SUSAN: What are you planning to do with the proceeds?
PAUL (looking thrown): Our plan for the proceeds?
SUSAN: As in what are you going to do with the profit?
PAUL: Yeah, right. Would you be able to hold on two seconds? My pasta's boiling over.
Paul then turns to Hannah and tells her quietly that Susan wants to know what they're going to do with the money. Hannah suggests that he lie: tell Susan it's going to a good cause - meaning *them*! Paul returns to the 'phone.
PAUL: Mrs. Kennedy?
SUSAN: Yes. Not too big a pasta disaster?! [This joke only works if 'pasta' is pronounced as 'parsta'!]
PAUL: Yeah, no, it's not too bad. Now where were we?
SUSAN: You were telling me about your plans for the money from the lamington stall.
PAUL: Right, the money. Well, the proceeds will be going to a good cause.
SUSAN: Like a charity?
PAUL: Yeah, yeah, that sort of thing.
SUSAN: Well as long as you do it outside class hours...
Paul thanks her and hangs up. Hannah comments that Susan bought it.
PAUL: For now. Man, I just totally lied - to the Principal.
HANNAH: Not exactly; we *are* a good cause - sort of...
No. 28
Everyone is having dinner, but there's tension in the air. Mike asks Joel how long he's been living there. Joel, however, explains that he's actually about to move out. Libby, looking surprised, asks where he's going. Bill explains that he's moving into No. 30. He then asks who's hiding the mustard.
SUSAN (sharply): William! Do you have some sort of problem with the schnitzel?
BILL: Just gathering a few condiments!
There's another silence. Susan offers Mike some more wine, but he declines. Libby smiles at him. Susan then comments to Mike that she understands from Libby that he has quite a hectic schedule.
MIKE: Well... not really, but it gets a little complicated when I have to juggle things around Sasha.
KARL: Sorry - Sasha?
MIKE: My daughter.
KARL (raising his eyebrows and glancing at Susan): You have a *child*?
Mike takes a photo out of his wallet, explaining as he does so that he and Sasha's mother separated some time ago; they share joint custody, but it's always chopping and changing. Karl looks at the photo and then shows it to Susan. She raises her eyebrows, looking bemused.
No. 26
Philip is trying the chocolate mix that Hannah and Paul have made for the lamingtons. He then comments that he thinks it's a very good idea for a business project, and he asks how many they plan on making.
PAUL: As many as it takes to pay back—
HANNAH (interrupting quickly): --to get fully involved in a small business project.
PHIL: Well that's good. You can't start an idea and leave it half baked! [He chuckles at his joke!] No bun intended!
Hannah and Paul respond with a stony silence!
PHIL: You have to get into the manufacture, the selling, the production, the counting the profits. You'd be surprised at how involved it is.
Hannah smiles that she thinks it's the counting profits bit she likes the best! Phil tells her that if they come up with a gimmick for their product, they can use it as a selling point. Hannah exclaims that they could dress up as lamingtons to sell them! Paul, however, tells her that there's no way he's doing that! Philip explains that they have to think about why they got into the lamington drive in the first place; use their imaginations. Paul just sighs heavily!
No. 28
Joel is addressing everyone seated at the dinner table:
JOEL: So I guess what I'm trying to say is: thank you very much for your hospitality. Thank you for making me feel so welcome. Thank you for... I don't know... everything!
Susan smiles that it's been great having him there. Bill then stands up and says *he* wants to propose a toast.
BILL: To an absolutely fantastic guy! Someone who's made a real difference to this household; shown a bit of G&D when needed!
Mike interrupts and asks what G&D is. Everyone murmurs that it's 'guts and determination'; footy talk! Bill continues:
BILL: Not only a great wit, sparkling personality, devastating good looks...
KARL: Steady on!
Bill concludes:
BILL: Ladies and gentlemen: Bill Kennedy!
There's a round of groans! Bill says quickly:
BILL: OK, OK, OK, OK. Joel Samuels: may he find peace and happiness in his new home.
Everyone raises their glasses and wishes Joel good luck. Susan then says:
SUSAN: Now *I* would like to raise a toast: to the dishes, and whoever helps me do 'em!
Karl smiles that he'll give her a hand. As the two of them stand up from the table, they both glance at Mike and then at each other, their eyebrows raised. They head to the kitchen area where Susan asks Karl quietly what he thinks.
KARL: What do I think about *what*?
SUSAN: Prince Charming!
KARL (shrugs): Well he seems like a nice enough bloke. Did you know about the whole...
SUSAN: ...the daughter thing? Well, from Bill, not Libby; I don't know when *she* was planning to tell us.
The two of them look across to where Mike and Libby are kissing at the table. Karl muses that from the look of it, they're going to have to get used to seeing quite a bit of Mike...
No. 30
Sarah opens the front door and looks surprised to find Karen standing on the step. Karen says quickly:
KAREN: Don't worry - I'm not expecting a welcoming committee; I just came to drop off some of Toadie's CDs.
SARAH: He's working.
KAREN: Yeah, I know. Actually, Sarah, it's *you* I wanted to see.
Sarah invites her in. Karen then says:
KAREN: I know you must be pretty mad with me at the moment, but I just really wanted a chance to explain what happened between me and Alex. We just *clicked*.
The two of them head into the lounge room where Sarah admits that, actually, she's not that mad at all; she won't be throwing Karen and Alex a party or anything, but *she* and Alex weren't really going anywhere.
KAREN (looking relieved): I am *so* glad to hear you say that, because I've been going over this in my head the whole way over here and, well, believe me, in my imagination it didn't go this nicely.
Sarah points out that it's really Toadie that Karen has to worry about.
KAREN (sighs): I know.
SARAH: He risked a lot to open up his feelings to you, and we both know he's not the kind of guy that does that easily.
KAREN: It's just that, lately, he's been so laid-back about our relationship, I just thought he wasn't interested.
SARAH (a look of disbelief on her face): You're not serious...?
KAREN: I kind of read the signals and just decided he'd gone off me. I got it really wrong, didn't I...
Ramsay Street
Libby and Mike are pashing outside No. 28. When they pull apart, Mike says;
MIKE: So how did I rate in the parents stakes? Two?
LIBBY: Um... two-and-a-half!
MIKE: That bad, huh?!
Libby, however, smiles that she thinks he did just fine! They kiss again and Mike tells Libby that he'll see her later. He then heads off down the path and climbs in his car. Libby walks up the path back to the house and finds Joel standing on the step. She exclaims:
LIBBY: Hey! How long have *you* been standing there perving?!
JOEL: Not too long. I didn't see anything!
LIBBY (shrugs): Not much *to* see.
Libby then puts her arm around Joel and asks him what he thinks.
JOEL: Yeah, he's nice.
Looking pleased, Libby goes to head inside. Joel, however, calls after her and asks if he can have a word.
LIBBY: Are you OK?
JOEL: Yeah, yeah, fine. Just about moving into No. 30.
LIBBY: Yeah? What about it?
JOEL: Well, I noticed you were a bit upset about the idea. I mean, I know things aren't that cool between you and Sarah right now... I just don't want to let anything come between *us*.
LIBBY (smiles weakly): Well, don't expect me to be popping over there to visit all that often; but you're welcome *here* any time, OK? You know that.
JOEL: Yeah, great. Thanks.
Joel continues to stare at Libby. She laughs:
LIBBY: Anything else?!
JOEL (hesitates before saying): Just... thanks.
Libby then gives him a kiss on the cheek and heads back inside. Joel stands there, looking disappointed.
No. 28
The next morning, Libby is sitting having breakfast at the table. Susan announces that she's off to work. Karl, who's making breakfast at the counter, sits down at the table with his daughter and comments that Mike seems like a nice enough bloke; got his head screwed on and all that. He then adds:
KARL: It was a bit of a surprise about the child.
LIBBY (shrugs): It's no big deal.
KARL: How long have they been separated?
LIBBY (coolly): Dad, if you're insinuating that I broke up their marriage, then you're barking up the wrong tree.
She adds pointedly:
LIBBY: *I'm* not the *type*...
Erinsborough High
Hannah and Paul are standing behind a table, boxes of lamingtons in front of them. Hannah asks Paul how much they've made. He tells her that they've got $4.50. That then becomes $5 when someone else drops 50c in the box. Hannah insists that once word gets around, they'll be swamped. The bell sounds. Hannah tells Paul that she'll meet him back there at recess.
No. 30
Toadie and Bill are helping Joel move his stuff in. Bill puts Joel's bike on the couch. Sarah comes in and comments that she hopes it's not staying there. Joel and Bill head back out. Left alone with Toadie, Sarah remarks that Bill was all right with her. She then comments to Toadie that maybe he'll get back with Karen.
TOADIE: Yeah, and maybe cows might fly...
Erinsborough High
It's recess, and Hannah and Paul are back selling their lamingtons. Hannah smiles at Paul that she *told* him sales would improve! Paul nods that they've made $65; if they keep this up, they'll be out of debt by the end of the week! Susan comes along and Hannah asks her if she'd like to buy a lamington. She agrees to. She pulls the lamington open to reveal a 'fortune' that Paul and Hannah have hidden inside. Paul asks what it says:
SUSAN: Um... 'A partnership will give you renewed vigour'!
HANNAH: That's a pretty good one!
SUSAN: It's a pretty good *lamington*! How much have you raked in so far?
PAUL: $65 and counting!
SUSAN: That's great! The charity you're donating to will be pleased!
HANNAH (hesitantly): Uh, yeah, yeah.
SUSAN: So have you decided who it's going to be, yet?
PAUL: No, no, we haven't made up our mind as yet.
SUSAN: Well what about the Salvation Army? I mean, the donation would have to come from the school, but I'd make sure your names were mentioned. What do you think?
HANNAH: Uh, great. We'll get back to you later on.
SUSAN: That's OK. I can take the money now, if you like, and I'll keep it safe, and you just catch up with me after school with the rest.
PAUL: Yeah, sure...
With that, Susan holds out her hand and Paul finds himself forced to hand the money over. He and Hannah look at each other despairingly!
