Number 22
Darren is enjoying a massage from Libby and jokes that Ruth said his back will never get better so Libby has to do this three times a day. He reminds Libby how many massages he gave her while she was studying; she owes him 50 minutes non- stop! Libby says it's Ruth job; she gets paid for it... and Darren's going to send her flowers too.
Number 32
Ruth and Philip are kissing on the couch. Ruth asks where they went wrong. Philip doesn't know. He thought he was going to lose her to Alistair. He was assertive, decisive and ambitious. Ruth asks if she can make a new list.
RUTH: Phil Martin, as- is. Laid back, caring, funny, contended... and I promise I won't try to change you again.
Anne comes home and is evasive about where Lance is, asking what's with the interrogation. Philip takes his cue to leave (after a couple more kisses).
RUTH: What's going on? What's wrong with Lance?
ANNE: Well you mean apart from needing a major brain transplant?
Anne changes the subject and asks if things were getting hot and steamy with Philip; she assumes they are back together. Ruth turns the TV on and Anne says she'll take that as a yes.
Coffee Shop
Caitlin tells Billy he'll be ready to try out for the swimming squad after a few more sessions with her. She and Mandi give him some criticisms and warn him that Simon will criticize him day and night on the squad. Billy wants to wait until after his exams; there's a lot going on. Caitlin asks if that James guy is still hanging around Anne but Billy says they only work together. Caitlin stirs things, saying Billy and Anne must have some incredible trust.
Number 32
Ruth has her feet up on Anne and they are watching TV when there's a knock at the door. They argue about who should go.
ANNE: You're on top, come on. It's probably Phil coming back for another pash!
Anne opens the door to James who asks if she wants to go out for food or a flick. Anne says she's busy but James doesn't take the hint so Anne makes it clearer and says she'd prefer it if he called first next time. James leaves and Ruth asks if Anne is always that rude to gentlemen callers. Anne explains that Billy thinks there's more to James hanging around all the time, and she has a feeling James would like there to be. Ruth tells her to go out with him and take Billy along too; if James makes a fuss she'll know he's interesting in being more than just friends.
Number 30
Billy helps Caitlin carry her swimming stuff into the house as her bag has broken. Sarah is not impressed that Caitlin had half their towels stuffed in her pool locker and now they stink; she thought they had an agreement. Caitlin apologises. She asks Billy to stay and watch a video or something but Billy makes excuses about studying and leaves.
Sarah comments that Caitlin's bag looks fine... she thinks she has a crush on Billy. Caitlin eventually admits it and says Billy likes her too. Sarah warns her that it's not cool chasing guys who are taken and instead of wasting her time she could be dating millions of single guys (good advice, Sarah).
Number 32
Ruth is surprised that Lance has left for school already and he didn't event give her a kiss goodbye. Anne tells her to count herself lucky! Anne goes to leave just as some flowers are delivered for Ruth. Anne wants to know if they're from Phil. Ruth asks who else they would be from as she opens the card. They're from Darren, to thank her for the physio. Anne leaves and Ruth reads the card, looking rather disturbed.
DARREN'S VOICE: Your massaging drives me wild. You knows any excuse to have you touch me is heaven. I'm looking forward to more of the same, Babe! Love, Darren.
Number 28
A bunch of flowers is delivered for Libby, and Billy wants to know why Darren is sucking up.
LIBBY: He's just telling me how much he...
BILLY: What? What?
LIBBY: Nothing.
BILLY: Has he dumped you?
LIBBY: No.
BILLY: That's not a bad way to do it actually!
LIBBY: I'd hate to see what he'd write in a dumping note. This is as bland as you can get. "Thanks, you've been a great help. Darren."
Billy teases Libby, and she tells him he'll choke on his study notes in a minute. Billy says they're all in his head anyway. He's going to blitz his exams... perhaps he should send his teachers some flowers to thank them for their help too.
Number 26
Hannah refuses to stay and iron her school uniform and rushes out of the house as Ruth arrives to show Philip the card from Darren.
PHILIP: Surely he can't be serious?
RUTH: Oh, well thanks very much, and why not?!
Philip says perhaps it is a joke. Ruth thinks it's very weird.
Coffee Shop
Billy orders a sandwich and Anne asks him if he can take a break from studying tonight to come out with her and James to make it clear that she has a boyfriend. Billy is not keen and Anne suggests he bring Caitlin to give her the same message! Billy says it would be a bit confronting but when Anne tells him not to worry about coming out with her and James he says he'll ask Caitlin.
Lou's Place
Philip is eating at the counter when Darren comes in. Philip asks him how his back is and mentions the flowers. Lou asks Philip if he's got some competition and Darren says it was just a thank you. Philip says he knew it had to be a joke and Darren is confused. He asks if Ruth is home as he tried to call her at the office.
DARREN: I just want to see her again, that's all.
PHILIP: Do you? Look, you do realise that Ruth and I are trying to get back together again don't you?
DARREN: Great. Good. Well, this won't take long. You can have her back when I'm finished, eh?!
Number 32
Ruth opens the door to Darren and tells him to come in. She thanks him for the flowers and Darren mentions that Philip was a bit funny about them; why would he think they were a joke?
RUTH: It wasn't a joke?
DARREN: No, of course not. You've been really great. I mean, that's why I'm here.
RUTH: Darren, before you go on...
DARREN: I'm desperate, Ruth.
RUTH: Darren, please!
DARREN: I know you're probably busy at the moment, so if we could just make it a quick one, I really need you!
RUTH: Darren, this is ridiculous! We had a professional arrangement. I can't believe you'd compromise that.
DARREN: Was it the flowers? Was that a bad thing?
RUTH: It was a little inappropriate, yes! I thought this was a joke.
Ruth tells Darren to take the flowers and go and have a think about things!
Coffee Shop
Caitlin arrives so Anne tells Billy to go and ask her now. Billy reluctantly approaches Caitlin and she reminds him to speak to Simon as she wants him on the swimming squad. Billy invites her for a pizza tonight along with Anne and James. Caitlin thinks Anne is trying to set her up with James. Billy explains that it's so James takes the hint that Anne already has a boyfriend.
CAITLIN: Oh I get it; and you're trying to do that to me too?
Billy groans; he didn't put that well at all (even though it was the truth). He tells Caitlin it will be really boring with James and so he wants her there. Caitlin agrees to come.
Number 28
Darren arrives with Ruth's flowers and tells Libby that's the last time he gives flowers to anyone; Ruth acted like he was being sleazy and so did Phil. Libby says she can understand Phil being a bit funny about Ruth getting something so nice, especially compared to Libby's small bunch of flowers. They realise the flowers got mixed up. Libby reads the card that went to Ruth; no wonder she thought he was sleazy... and there was Libby thinking he couldn't write romantic notes!
DARREN: What am I gonna do? I'm just lucky Phil didn't deck me.
LIBBY: Well Ruth certainly thinks you're hot to trot! You'd better go straighten her out, lover boy!
Number 32
Ruth and Philip are still puzzling over Darren. Philip wonders how Libby feels about it.
PHILIP: I hope your massages don't have this effect on all your clients!
RUTH: I don't know, maybe I'm just irresistible!
There's a knock at the door and Ruth goes to answer it. Darren comes in and explains the mix up with the flowers.
DARREN: You don't have to worry, Phil, I'd never think about Ruth in that way. No, not at all.
PHILIP: What do you mean by that?
RUTH: What are you insinuating?
DARREN: Well, you know, she's... I mean you're nice, you're just a bit too...
RUTH: Too what?
DARREN: Oh... just too, um... not really my...
PHILIP: Your type?
DARREN: That's it.
PHILIP: Not your type.
DARREN: Not my type. Just not my type. No, I mean, not that you're... that sounds really terrible. Um... no, look I'm sure that Phil's your type and everything but um... Hey, come on, it's funny when you think about it isn't it, hey?
PHILIP: What's so unbelievable about Ruth being attractive?
DARREN: Nothing! Nothing, nothing at all!
Number 30
Caitlin is doing her make up when Sarah comes home. Caitlin tells her she's going on a double date with James Bowen. Sarah guesses that Billy and Anne are the other couple and asks if this is all to impress Billy. Caitlin denies it and says she's just taking Sarah's advice. Sarah says this isn't what she meant and James is going to think she's dressed up for him. Billy arrives to pick up Caitlin and is surprised she's so dressed up just for the coffee shop. Sarah tells Caitlin to take her jacket.
Coffee Shop
Anne tells James to stop checking his watch. James wants to know about this "other chick" and says Anne had better not be trying to set him up. Billy and Caitlin arrive and James and Caitlin appear to be instantly smitten with each other. Caitlin takes Sarah's jacket off and James tells her she looks great. Anne is grinning but turns to Billy who doesn't look quite so happy.
