- Amy tells Lance he could ask Ruth if she can stay the night
Number 32
Lance and Amy are watching videos. Ruth asks Lance to tidy up because Philip and Hannah will be here soon. Amy tells Lance to ask Ruth now about her staying the night. Ruth is taken aback and doesn't think Amy's parents would be too thrilled but Amy says they would be cool.
RUTH: You know what? I don't think it's such a good idea. Maybe not tonight. Maybe later... when you're older!
Ruth hurries out of the room and Amy tells Lance he'll just have to keep trying.
Number 28
Darren is massaging Libby's shoulders while she works on the computer. Libby asks what exciting things Darren has got planned for them tonight but he's planning to go home so she can study. Libby complains that she's been studying all day and needs a break but Darren says she will have a break once she's passed her exams. Billy appears and Libby complains that Billy has a better social life than she does. Darren promises to make it up to her once her exams are over.
Number 32
In the kitchen, Lance is trying to convince Ruth that he and Amy won't get up to anything but Ruth says no and that's the end of it. Amy sucks up, saying it's Ruth's house and she understands the rules. Ruth tells Anne she can invite Billy for dinner since Philip and Hannah are coming and Amy is staying... for dinner! Lance, Amy and Anne leave the room.
ANNE: I can't believe that you actually asked Mum if Amy could stay over. I mean, what part of your incredibly tiny little brain actually thought she'd say yes?
Lance tells Amy she could have backed him up but Amy says Ruth is his mother. Anne thinks they've both lost it and leaves to get Billy. Amy tells Lance that Ruth is starting to weaken; she has to get sick of staying no some time. Lance doesn't look convinced.
Lou's Place
Martin is playing pool and Darren tells him to watch his back as he leaves with some bottles. Martin has heard that Darren and Libby are back together and says he should have had money on it. He asks Darren for a game of pool as he's been wiping the floor with everyone. Darren asks if he shouldn't be at home studying but Martin knows he'll scrape through. Darren says it must be nice to be so confident. Martin throws some cash down on the pool table and says THAT is confidence. Darren takes the bait. "Rack 'em up!"
Number 28
Libby is still on the computer and Billy comments how things were exactly the same a year ago when she was studying for her final exams; it's like a time warp.
LIBBY: Don't you have something to do?
BILLY: Yeah, heaps, but someone's on the computer aren't they?
Billy answers a knock at the door. It's Anne, who tells him not to eat any more of his sandwich because Ruth has invited him for dinner. Billy goes to grab a jumper and Anne tells him about Lance trying to get Ruth to let Amy stay the night. Billy reminds Anne how Ruth went nuts over the horse riding camp. He says they should be backing up Lance as it would mean he'd be able to stay over too.
BILLY [leaving Libby his sandwich]: Hey, Lib, that's in case you get hungry. And can you please tell Mum and Dad that I won't be home for dinner? [There's no response] Yeah, have fun nerd!
ANNE: She's not listening.
BILLY: Well in that case, Libby's an ugly boring cow!
LIBBY: The next time you come near me I'll rip both your arms off, OK? See you Anne!
Lou's Place
Martin is giving an annoying commentary as Darren breaks.
MARTIN: Oh, and almost the near perfect break from the master of breaks. Or should we say breakouts? Seeing as though the gentleman in question has recently been enjoying free accommodation and board at Her Majesty's Pleasure?
Darren says Libby has obviously told Martin a fair bit about him. Martin says Libby just talks about him a lot. Darren tells Martin his parole has finished which makes him a free man, so perhaps wise guys like him should get off his case. Martin says he was only joking; obviously jail isn't that funny. Darren says no it's not. Martin confesses to Darren that he stole a car and crashed it when he was 16 but he was let off with a fine. He apologises for what he said before.
Number 32
Philip and Hannah have arrived for dinner and Anne tells Lance to stop hogging the stereo. Lance asks Philip a hypothetical question; what would he say if Hannah asked for her boyfriend to stay the night. Philip says he would need to know the entire circumstances like who the boyfriend is and where they met.
LANCE: They met at school, they've been going out for ages, and he's a really nice guy.
HANNAH: Yeah, and he looks exactly like Brad Pitt!
Philip says so long as Hannah could prove she could be responsible he would consider saying yes. Ruth comes back in the room and Lance immediately tells her Philip said Hannah could have her boyfriend stay over! Philip defensively says it was hypothetical!
RUTH: It's OK Phil, I know exactly what's going on. Lance still thinks I was born yesterday.
LANCE: It must be that glowing youthful radiance emanating from your face! It gets me every time you know!
Ruth asks the kids to go and set the table and tells Philip she can't believe he fell for the old hypothetical question trick!
Lou's Place
Darren and Martin are getting along much better now. Martin is impressed with Darren's pool skills and Darren says he learnt the shot from a mate in prison called "Bubba"! Lou is heading home and Darren says he'll be along soon but Martin wants a chance to win his $100 back. Lou tells Darren to take him up on it; a fool and his money are easily parted. Darren asks if his girlfriend won't be pining for him at home but Martin says he and Sasha are having teething problems. Martin snatches the $100 note from Darren's front pocket and does a runner!
Number 32
There is a good humoured debate taking place as Anne asks Ruth what the difference is between a group of 10- year- olds having a slumber party and teenagers having their friends to stay the night. Ruth says only a few million extra hormones. Lance says they will have even more hormones when they're older. Philip is laughing and Ruth tells him to jump in and help whenever he likes.
PHILIP: No, no, no, it's not my argument.
HANNAH: Yeah, that's right; Dad's already agreed that I can have my boyfriend stay over whenever I like!
Amy says her brother is allowed to have his girlfriends stay over... but he is 22!
RUTH: You see I was going to say that it was OK for Lance at 18, but I think 22 is a much more sensible age!
The kids want to know why age makes such a difference and Ruth says because she has said so and now there are dishes to do; boys wash and girls wipe.
LANCE: Now sexism!
RUTH: Sexism, yes! Lovely!
Number 22
Libby comes looking for Darren as the computer screen is driving her nuts but she's surprised to learn from Lou that he got tied up playing pool with Martin.
LIBBY: He's definitely no mate of Darren's... enemies would be closer.
DARREN: Well then they're the friendliest looking enemies I've ever seen, love. The way they were carrying on I wouldn't be surprised if they came home tonight with each other's names tattooed on their butts!
Libby is not impressed after she's been studying all day. Lou asks if he can give Darren a message but Libby says she'll deliver it personally bright and early in the morning.
Number 32
Hannah thanks Ruth for dinner and leaves. Ruth stops Philip at the door and asks him what he really thinks about boyfriends and girlfriends sleeping over. Philip tells her to lay down some ground rules; Amy can bunk down in Anne's room... put a big padlock on Lance's door! Ruth laughs and says it's got to be better than listening to them whinge for the rest of the evening. Philip thanks Ruth for an entertaining evening and suggests dinner for two next week.
Ruth returns to the lounge and tells the kids to stop squabbling over a CD otherwise Amy can't stay over! They are all shocked that Amy can stay but Ruth tells Anne to get the foldout bed so Amy can stay in her room. Amy says that won't be necessary but Ruth says they can't have her sleeping on the floor! It's too late anyway as Amy's parents pull up outside to collect her and Ruth doesn't want them to have driven over here for nothing. Anne asks if Billy can stay then. Ruth says Billy lives two doors away and it's probably time he was going home too.
Ramsay Street
Susan collects the newspaper the following morning and sees Darren and Martin staggering home across the street. She calls Libby. Martin has got a phone number from a girl but he wants to sort things out with Sasha and he's not one to cheat on someone he loves. Darren says he wishes he were smart like that. Martin knows about what happened with Catherine from Libby. He thought he'd go crazy if he heard the story one more time; it was obvious even back then that Libby was still nuts about Darren.
MARTIN: She would have denied it until she was blue in the face but I knew. Come on, everyone knew. She still loves you! [He sees something] Of course... um... things can change overnight.
Darren turns around to see Libby and she doesn't look happy.
Number 22
Darren tells Libby they left the pool hall at 2 and went to a couple of clubs, then a house party at a friend of Martin's. Libby says she thought they hated each other. Darren says he felt sorry for him as he was at the pub all by himself with nobody to talk to. Martin says that's a lie. Darren tells Martin to go and crash upstairs and asks Libby not to be angry with him. Libby is only angry because he didn't take her with him. Darren says he didn't know until the last minute, and she was studying.
DARREN: Do you want me to have a miserable, boring time just because you are?
LIBBY: Yes!
Darren promises to make it up to Libby today... just as soon as he's had about 10 hours' sleep!
Number 32
Lance has arranged for Amy to stay over tonight since Ruth said she could do so "some other time". Ruth is flustered and tells Lance to hang on a minute. Anne asks if Billy can stay too and Ruth yells no.
Number 26
Ruth tells Philip that now Anne is on her back about Billy staying; if she had her way neither of them would stay. Philip reminds her she's already said yes but Ruth says she was railroaded into it. She says she's going to wake up every morning with another body on her living room floor and will have to play the bad guy again. Philip tells her she needs to be one step ahead...
Lou's Place
Libby is sitting at the bar talking to Lou when Martin and Darren arrive. Darren says he could sleep for another week and Martin asks if they're not rocking on again tonight, much to Libby's horror. Darren asks him if he doesn't need to study and Martin says he'll be fine as he's repeating. He's thinking about quitting anyway and buying old houses to fix up but he needs a partner with building experience. Darren jumps at the chance but Libby reminds them they couldn't stand each other last week.
Number 32
Anne, Amy and Lance are watching TV when Ruth comes home and tells Anne she'd better give Billy a ring if she still wants him to stay over!
ANNE: Can you believe that?
LANCE: I'm not sure.
AMY: Well it sounded pretty straightforward to me.
LANCE: No, no, no, no, no, you don't know Mum.
AMY: Well what's to know? I'm staying the night with you and it looks like Billy's staying the night with Anne. Your Mum's really cool!
LANCE: Yeah, well she's certainly shocked me!
ANNE: I can't believe it!
