Daphne tells Des she's going out to avoid her father's visit. But as she's leaving, the doorbell rings.

Daphne tells Des to answer the door an makes her escape through the back. But it's only Eileen, saying she's come to welcome a member of the family to Ramsay Street. Daphne is furious and storms out.

Daphne comes around and finds Helen, Jim and Scott having dinner. They invite her to stay for a while.
HELEN: I must warn you though, Nell Mangel is coming over later to sit for a portrait.
DAPHNE: Oh, that's OK.
JIM:(stunned) OK?! Things must be bad! Are you sure you and Des haven't had an argument or something?!
Daphne explains that she just needed to get out for a while.

Eileen is raving on that Daphne shouldn't treat her father that way, but Des says Daphne might have a good reason. The doorbell rings and Des answers it - it's Allan. Des introduces Allan to Eileen and invites him in. A bit of an awkward silence descends and Eileen tells Allan that Daphne has been called out on an emergency(!)

Daphne has told Helen and Jim what happened with her father and they are sympathetic. They never had a good relationship anyway as her father was away a lot. They suggests that Daphne faces her father though, he doesn't seem to be giving up. She decides to go and confront him.

Eileen, Des and Allan are having cake. She is forced to admit that Daphne didn't want to see him, so has gone out. Allan gets up to leave, but as he opens the door, Daphne is standing there.
(Later)
Everyone is sitting awkwardly in the living room with Eileen making inane conversation about the weather. Des tries to drag Eileen off.
DAPHNE: There's no need for that, Des, anything I have to say can be said in front of you and Eileen.
Des and Eileen make a sharp exit(!)
DAPHNE: Alright. I'm here now, what do you want?
ALLAN: Daphne...I know it must be something of a shock my turning up like this, but I hoped we could settle our differences.
Daphne tells him that it's too late. Allan admits that he always put the business first, but they could try to like each other. Daphne says after all that's happened, she isn't capable of liking him.
Des and Eileen come back. Allan tells her that Daphne's mother left him three years ago. Eileen is shocked at Daphne's indifference.

Mrs Mangel is sitting for the portrait and Jim and Scott are trying not to laugh. She tells Jim how much she disapproves of Lucy being in Paris with Bradley. Scott heads off to Charlene's place. Mrs Mangel says that Madge and Harold aren't home, so Scott and Charlene might be led into temptation(!) Mrs Mangel goes on to say that she doesn't think Madge and Harold's relationship will last. Jim is about to say something, but Helen shushes him!
Lassiter's Restaurant
Harold and Madge are still at dinner. Harold tells Madge that she's done a wonderful job bringing up Charlene - Charlene is so strong- willed.

Allan is talking to Eileen and des about his business. Daphne is standing by the window, sulking. Allan admits he was too busy to give Daphne love at the time, but he wants to make up for it now.
EILEEN: You can understand that, can't you Daphne.
DAPHNE:(furious) I'll never understand and I'll never forgive him.
Eileen suggests that Daphne was imagining things, but Daphne furiously tells her she wasn't. She pours out a story - her first real boyfriend, Matt, didn't meet the approval of her parents. They got Daphne out of the way and then told Matt that Daphne didn't love him and had made a mistake. Matt went out and got drunk. On the way home he crashed his car and was seriously injured. He called for Daphne while lying in hospital, and Matt's mother called to ask Daphne to come. But Allan took the message and didn't pass it on. Daphne finally read about Matt's death in the newspaper. She'll never forgive them for that.
Eileen stutters a bit and says she thinks she'd better go home. Des hugs Daphne. He goes to take Eileen home.
DAPHNE: It's time you went, too.

Charlene and Scott are hanging out. Charlene is worrying how she will find a job within Madge's two week time limit. Scott doesn't think it's possible. Charlene wonders if she can get Harold to talk to Madge(!)

Allan still hasn't gone. Daphne is clearing up. Allan still wants to repair the damage to their relationship, saying the mistake with Matt was made because they were worried about her. Daphne says that he never loved her or her mother - they were only ever possessions to him.
DAPHNE: I want to be left alone, you can see yourself out.
ALLAN: Fair enough. But I'll be back. I haven't got to where I am by being a quitter.
He leaves.

Helen is just finishing the sitting with Mrs Mangel, but won't show her the result - she wants to get it framed first. Madge and Harold pop around to show Helen and Jim her engagement ring. Mrs Mangel is shocked to see the large stone and Harold said he thought Madge deserved something more substantial! Mrs Mangel says that it's a bit improper that Charlene and Scott are alone in No.24 and Harold looks a bit worried(!)

Des comes back from taking Eileen home. He comforts Daphne on the sofa. He apologises for bringing her father around - he didn't know the full story. Daphne explains that her father always wanted a boy, not a girl. When she was born, he lost interest. She tried to make it up to him by being a tomboy. But when Matt died that was the end of their relationship.
DAPHNE: You bet there's a reason behind behind this sudden urge to make amends, and I just wish I knew what it was.

Charlene and Scott are kissing on the sofa when Madge and Harold arrive back. Madge isn't too pleased and accuses them of having a "rendezvous" in the living room. They protest they were just talking and listening to music. Harold sends Scott home.
When he's gone, Charlene tells Harold to mind his own business, but Madge says Harold is going to be more involved in how she and Henry live their lives.
HAROLD: Sit down, Charlene. You and I have got a few things to sort out.
